The Lives of the Prophets: Prophet Nuuh (‘alayhis-salaam) Part 2

Prophet Nuuh (‘alayhis salaam)

Part 2

Prophet Nuuh started to make du’aa to Allaah.

37:75 (In the days of old), Nuuh cried to us, and we are the best to Hear Prayer.

71:26 And Noah, said: “O My Lord! Leave not of the unbelievers, a single one on earth!

71:27 “For, if You leave (any of) them, they will but mislead Your servants, and they will breed none but wicked ungrateful ones.

After 950 years of patience, Nuuh finally made du’aa to Allaah against his people. The du’aa was received by Allaah and He instructed Nuuh to build the ark.

11:37. “And construct the ship under Our eyes and with Our inspiration, and address Me not on behalf of those who did wrong; they are surely to be drowned.”

As he constructed it, whenever a person from his village passed him, they would make fun of him.

11:38. and as he was constructing the ship, whenever the chiefs of his people passed by him, they made a mockery of him. He said: “If you mock at us, so do we mock at you likewise for your mocking.

11:39. “And you will know who it is on whom will come a torment that will cover Him with disgrace and on whom will fall a lasting torment.”

11:40. (so it was) till Then there came Our command and the oven gushed forth (water like fountains from the earth). we said: “Embark therein, of each kind two (male and female), and your family, except him against whom the word has already gone forth, and those who believe. And none believed with him, except a few.”

When the water started coming out of the Earth and rain falling from the sky, Allaah instructed Nuuh to go into the ark and take with him the believers and his family and to carry a pair – male and female of every animal.

The number of believers with Nuuh goes from 7-80.

When he went on the ark he said Bismillaah.

11:41. and He [Nuuh (Noah)] said: “Embark therein; In the Name of Allaah will be its moving course and its resting anchorage. Surely, My Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Tafseer At-Tabari, Vol. 12, Page 43)

The waves picked up the ark and Nuuh saw his son in front of his eyes.

11:42. so it (the ship) sailed with them amidst the waves like mountains, and Nuuh (Noah) called out to his son, who had separated himself (apart), “O My son! Embark with us and be not with the disbelievers.”

His son thought in terms of Dunya and said,

11:43. the son replied: “I will betake myself to a mountain, it will save me from the water.” Nuuh (Noah) said: “This Day there is no saviour from the decree of Allaah except Him on whom He has mercy.” and a wave came In between them, so He (the son) was among the drowned.

11:44. and it was said: “O earth! Swallow up Your water, and O sky! Withhold (your rain).” and the water was diminished (made to subside) and the decree (of Allaah) was fulfilled (i.e. the destruction of the people of Nuuh (Noah). and it (the ship) rested on Mount Judi, and it was said: “Away with the people who are Dhalimoon (polytheists and wrong-doing)!”

11:45. and Nuuh (Noah) called upon his Lord and said, “O My Lord! Verily, My son is of my family! And certainly, Your Promise is true, and You are the Most just of the judges.”

11:46. He said: “O Nuuh (Noah)! Surely, he is not of your family; verily, his work is unrighteous, so ask not of Me that of which you have no knowledge! I admonish you, lest you be one of the ignorant.”

11:47. Nuuh (Noah) said: “O My Lord! I seek Refuge with You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive Me and have Mercy on Me, I would indeed be one of the losers.”

The story of Nuuh has been mentioned in many suwar of the Qur’aan. The longest version is in Surat Huud. It starts with ayah 25 and goes up until ayah 48.

11:49. This is of the news of the unseen which we reveal unto you (O Muhammad), neither you nor your people knew them before this. so be patient. Surely, the (good) end is for the Muttaqeen.

Ayah 49 is telling Rasuulullaah (salAllaahu ‘alayhi wasallam). The lesson is to be patient. The ayaat revealed is leading to this meaning. Allaah closes the story of Nuuh telling Rasuulullaah (salAllaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) look at the story of Nuuh, 950 years of patience, of making da’wah and he never gave up.

The Lives of the Prophets: Prophet Nuuh (‘alayhis-salaam) Part 1

Prophet Nuuh (‘alayhis salaam)

Part 1

Bukhaari: Rasuulullaah (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, “Between Aadam and Nuuh, there were many generations, 10 of them were Muslim. Then disbelief and shirk slowly started to creep in.”

Bukhari: Ibn ‘Abbaas (radiAllaahu ‘anhu) said: “The generations after Aadam slowly started losing their religion and committing sins. But they still believed in Tawheed. The righteous men among them were few. Shaytaan came to them and told them, “When these righteous men pass away, you will have no one to remind you about Allaah and ‘Ibaadah. So when they pass, erect some statues in their memorial to remind you about ‘Ibaadah.” They did so and Shaytaan left them for a while, until they forgot the reason why they were built. He came back and said to them, “Why don’t you worship these statues?” And that is how shirk started.

Allaah talks about these 5 idols:

  1. Waddan
  2. Suwaa’an
  3. Yaghuuf
  4. Ya’ooq
  5. Nasr

Ibn ‘Abbaas (radiAllaahu ‘anhu) said that these were righteous men. The people of Nuuh started worshipping them as idols.

Nuuh (‘alayhis-salaam) was the first Rasuulullaah (Messenger of Allaah) to the people of the earth.

Ash-Shafaa’a: “When the people of the Day of Judgement will go to Nuuh, what will they tell him? You are the first Messenger of Allaah to the people of the world.

Nuuh is one of the 5 uul ul-‘Azaam. The greatest 5 Prophets of Allaah. The other four are:

  1. Muhammad (salAllaahu ‘alayhi wasallam)
  2. Ibraheem (‘alayhis salaam)
  3. Muusaa (‘alayhis salaam)
  4. ‘Eesaa (‘alayhis salaam)

The message of Nuuh is mentioned in the Qur’aan:

11:25. “We sent Nuuh to His people (with a mission): “I have come to you with a Clear Warning.”

11:26. “That you worship none but Allaah. Verily I do fear for you the penalty of a grievous Day.”

The message of Tawheed, this is the message of every Prophet of Allaah.

The Prophets of Allaah don’t just send out the Message and leave, they deliver the Message and tell the people that they have to obey them. They came to be followed.

The methods of the da’wah of Nuuh:

71:5. He said: “O My Lord! I have called to My people night and Day:

He used to make da’wah to them in the night and in the day.

He appealed to them in the open announcement, in public and in private.

71:8. “So I have called to them aloud;

71:9. “Further I have spoken to them in public and secretly in private,

He said the more he gave da’wah to them, the further away they go and the worst the situation becomes.

71:6. “But all my calling added nothing but to (their) flight (from the truth).

71:7. And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with [great] arrogance.

He would give them da’wah and they would put their fingers in their ears and covered themselves and they would be arrogant and proud.

As difficult as it was, Nuuh did this for 950 years.

71:10. And said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.

He told his people about the benefits of Istighfaar.

71:11. ‘He will send rain to you in abundance;

71:12. ‘And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you Gardens and bestow on you rivers.’ “

That if they did so, their Lord would send them rain in abundance and more.

During the 950 of his da’wah, only a few people became Muslim. These people tended to be from the weak and the poor.

The leaders of society came to Nuuh and said:

11:27.So the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, ” We do not see you but as a man like ourselves, and we do not see you followed except by those who are the lowest of us [and] at first suggestion. And we do not see in you over us any merit; rather, we think you are liars.”

The followers of the Anbiya are usually the weak and the poor.

The leaders said “You have to kick out the weak people and the slaves that follow you otherwise we will not listen to you”. But Nuuh said, “I will not drive them out, they are the believers.”

And then Nuuh said,

11:31. “And I do not say to you that with me are the treasures of Allaah, “Nor that I know the Ghayb (unseen); “Nor do I say I am an angel, and I do not say of those whom your eyes look down upon that Allaah will not bestow any good on them. Allaah knows what is in their inner-selves (as regards belief, etc.). In that case, I should, indeed be one of the Dhaalimeen (wrong-doers, oppressors, etc.).”

11:32. they said: “O Nuuh (Noah)! You have disputed with us and much have you prolonged the dispute with us, now bring upon us what you threaten us with, if you are of the truthful.”

11:33. He said: “Only Allaah will bring it (the punishment) on you, if He wills, and then you will escape not.

Then Nuuh said,

71:21. Nuuh (Noah) said: “My Lord! They have disobeyed me, and followed one whose wealth and children give him no increase but only loss.

11:36.And it was revealed to Nuuh that, “No one will believe from your people except those who have already believed, so do not be distressed by what they have been doing.
